Matt Dell is a community leader who wants to create positive change in Victoria.

Matt is a parent, a civil servant, and a former Crystal Pool lifeguard. He is a long-time Victoria resident and has spent 20 years volunteering in his community, promoting arts and culture, supporting youth sports, and advocating for sustainability.

Community Service

  • Since 2018, Matt has served as president of the South Jubilee Community Association, where he works to improve quality of life for local residents. As secretary for the Victoria Community Association Network, Matt works collaboratively with community-leaders across Victoria on the key issues facing our city. 
  • As a young parent, he’s coached baseball and soccer, and serves on the Board at National Little League. As part of Oaklands PAC, Matt worked to enroll the school in the CRD’s “Ready, Step, Roll” program to address traffic concerns surrounding the school.
  • To support at-risk youth in his own community, Matt started the “Do The Loop” fundraiser, a 25km run around Victoria, that raised over $68,000 for Threshold Housing Society. Recently, Matt formed CASA Greater Victoria, to build Conestoga Hut temporary shelters as part of the solution to the housing crisis.

Leadership & Experience

  • Matt has over 10 years experience working on complex policy issues and drafting legislation, and has a strong understanding of legal and governance issues. Matt spent 8 years working at the Ministry of Finance, where he wrote tax legislation, including to draft and reimplement the new Provincial Sales Tax.
  • He currently serves as a Director of Legislation at the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, with the Government of B.C.
  • He has a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Victoria, with a specialization in policies to support small-scale & urban agriculture in BC.

Arts and culture

  • Music and art are a passion for Matt, including a commitment to Victoria’s music community as an event organizer and musician. Matt’s passion is to re-establish Victoria as a “Music City,” a place known across Canada for its thriving live music and arts culture.
  • Matt toured Canada extensively with his previous music projects, Kincaide (metal) and Croatia (electronic), seeing first-hand how local music thrives. Currently, Matt leads  “The Big Tree Band”, who play children’s music at community events around Victoria, including a series of shows in Beacon Hill Park this summer.  

Family

  • Matt lives in the South Jubilee neighborhood of Victoria, with his children Sophie (5) and Corbin (9), and his wife Rebecca, a speech therapist at Island Health.
  • They enjoy hiking around the south Island, spending time at local parks and meeting other families in the city.
